A police officer is seriously injured in a crash while providing security for Vice President JD Vance’s motorcade in Maryville, Tennessee, authorities said.
Maryville Police Officer Justin Brown and a state trooper were involved in the Friday night incident “during an executive protection mission involving multiple law enforcement agencies,” Maryville officials said.
The Maryville Police Department said citizens remained at the scene and “immediately administered urgent first aid.”

“To those people whose quick response saved FTO Brown’s life last night, we could never thank you enough. You are true heroes,” Maryville Police Chief Tony Crisp said in a statement Saturday.
Brown was taken to a hospital in critical condition and underwent surgery Saturday morning, Maryville police said.
An ambulance that was part of the caravan also stopped and provided immediate medical attention, according to Special Agent Jason Pack, director of communications for the Tennessee Department of Safety and Security.

The officer involved in the collision was evaluated by paramedics and was not transported, authorities said.
A spokesperson for the United States Secret Service confirmed to ABC News that Vance was in the motorcade.
“The United States Secret Service is closely monitoring a serious traffic incident involving local law enforcement personnel that occurred this afternoon in Maryville, Tennessee, while supporting a protective caravan movement,” Katherine Pierce, resident agent in charge of the Knoxville office, said in a separate statement.
He said “the protectees were not affected by this incident” and added: “Our thoughts are with those officers, their families and their agencies.”
